چکیده

This paper presents the use of a dynamically adaptive mesh refinement strategy for the simulations of shock-driven turbulent mixing. Large-eddy simulations are necessary due the high Reynolds number turbulent regime. In this approach, the large scales are simulated directly and small scales at which the viscous dissipation occurs are modeled. A low-numerical centered finite-difference scheme is used in turbulent flow regions while a shock-capturing method is employed to capture shocks. Threedimensional parallel simulations of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability performed in plane and converging geometries are described.

Application of the Schwarz-Christoffel Transformation in Solving Two-Dimensional Turbulent Flows in Complex Geometries

In this paper, two-dimensional turbulent flows in different and complex geometries are simulated by using an accurate grid generation method. In order to analyze the fluid flow, numerical solution of the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations are solved using CFD techniques. Considering the complexity of the physical geometry, conformal mapping is used to generate an orthogonal grid by means of...

Parallel Implementation of Numerical Dissipation Rate and Viscosity Post-processing in Computational Fluid Dynamics

In simulations of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the numerical dissipation generated from discretization of governing equations can rarely be ignored. Estimating numerical dissipation rate and numerical viscosity is not only pressing for subgrid scale (SGS) modelling in Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and low order methods such as Finite Volume Method (FVM) in commerical codes, but also helpf...

Comparisons of Experimental and Simulated Velocity Fields in Membrane Module Spacers

Spacers are used in spiral wound and plate and frame membrane modules to create flow channels between adjacent membrane layers and mix fluid within the flow channel. Flow through the spacer has a significant beneficial impact on mixing and resulting mass transfer rates but is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pressure drop. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a common tool used to eva...

High Performance Adaptive Finite Element Methods : With Applications in Aerodynamics

The massive computational cost for resolving all scales in a turbulent flow makes a direct numerical simulation of the underlying Navier-Stokes equations impossible in most engineering applications. Recent advances in adaptive finite element methods offer a new powerful tool in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The computational cost for simulating turbulent flow can be minimized by adaptivel...
